Foinikas Abandoned Village
Ongoing place Foinikas Templar Knights village
Hidden beside the Asprokremmos Reservoir in the Paphos district, Foinikas is one of Cyprus’ most intriguing abandoned settlements. Often associated with the Knights Templar, this historic village offers a fascinating mix of medieval ruins, dramatic landscapes and a mysterious atmosphere.
Foinikas is believed to have served as an administrative base for the Knights Templar during the medieval period. Later, it remained a lived-in village for centuries before being abandoned following the events of 1974. The construction of the Asprokremmos Dam in the early 1980s further transformed the landscape, and rising reservoir waters have sometimes covered parts of the old settlement.
Today, visitors can see the remains of stone houses, old walls and traces of the village’s former streets. Wild vegetation has gradually reclaimed the ruins, creating a striking contrast between ancient stonework and the blue waters of the reservoir.
