Profitis Elias Church

Perched on a rocky hill overlooking Protaras, Profitis Elias Church is one of the area’s most recognisable landmarks. This small Greek Orthodox chapel sits approximately 100 metres above sea level and offers sweeping panoramic views of the resort, the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding coastline. The present stone church was built in 1984 on the site of an earlier Byzantine chapel. Its traditional architecture blends naturally with the rocky landscape, while the elevated setting makes it visible from many parts of Protaras. Reaching the church involves climbing around 150–156 steps, but the views from the top make the effort worthwhile. Visit around sunset to watch the coastline change colour, or return after dark when the illuminated chapel creates a striking sight above the town. Highlights - Panoramic Views: Look out over Protaras, the Mediterranean coastline and, on clear days, the wider Famagusta area. - Hilltop Chapel: Discover a traditional stone church perched on a rocky summit. - Scenic Staircase: Climb the steps for beautiful views along the way. - Sunset Spot: Enjoy golden-hour colours over the coast. - Illuminated at Night: See the church glowing above Protaras after dark. - Memorial Ribbons: Look for the nearby tree decorated with ribbons and pieces of fabric left by visitors in remembrance or as personal wishes. Practical Information - Admission: Free - Opening hours: The hill and exterior viewpoint can generally be accessed throughout the day and evening. Access to the church interior may vary. - Steps: Approximately 150–156 steps to the top. - Parking: A small parking area is available near the foot of the staircase. - Recommended visit: 30–45 minutes. Important Information The staircase is steep and largely exposed to the sun, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially in summer. There is limited shade on the climb. Dress respectfully if you plan to enter the church, and remember that it is an active place of worship.
