Agios Dimitrios Festival of Tradition and Culture
The Agios Dimitrios Festival of Tradition and Culture is an annual celebration of Cypriot heritage, traditional crafts and village life, held in the picturesque mountain village of Agios Dimitrios in the Marathasa Valley, within the Troodos Mountains. Organised around the feast day of Saint Dimitrios, the village’s patron saint, the festival brings together local artisans, food producers, musicians and visitors for a day dedicated to preserving and sharing the island’s cultural traditions.
One of the festival’s main highlights is the village’s distinctive red-clay pottery, a traditional craft recognised in Cyprus’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Visitors can watch skilled potters work with clay and demonstrate traditional techniques on the potter’s wheel. The displays include handmade vessels and everyday objects that reflect the practical artistry of rural Cypriot life.
Food is another important part of the celebration. Visitors can discover how traditional Cypriot delicacies are prepared, including palouzes, a grape-must dessert, and trachanas, a traditional fermented grain and dairy product used to make a hearty soup. Demonstrations of zivania production also highlight the region’s long-standing connection with grape growing and traditional food preservation.
The festival offers opportunities to sample homemade dishes, browse local products and seasonal fruit, and discover the culinary traditions of the South Marathasa region. Traditional Cypriot music and folk dancing add to the atmosphere, inviting visitors to experience the warmth and hospitality of a mountain village celebration.
Set against the natural scenery of the Troodos Mountains, the festival is an excellent opportunity to explore a lesser-known part of Cyprus while experiencing its crafts, flavours and living traditions.
